Truly A Tough Old Bird

Truly A Tough Old Bird

Jim Hoy

Spike is a tough old bird, and that's not just a cliché. Spike is a Great Egret that has been freeloading at The Cook's Café on Second Street for about fifteen years. For many of those years people have seen a large lump on one of Spike's legs that may have been broken and healed. Spike was missing for several weeks after one of our too frequent hurricanes, but then returned for his regular free lunches...and dinners. About three months ago Spike showed up with a badly swollen leg that he could not stand on.

Yes, Spike has a head, but this is about his legs.

Spike now uses both legs, with some favoritism, but is a regular again at Cook's. He can certainly be called a tough old bird.
