At precisely 8:45 AM, September 11, 2006 a minute of silence opened a memorial service in Cedar Key for the 3070 victims of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The service was organized by the Cedar Lions Club, with the club President Judy Duvall presiding.

A crowd of about 160 people gathered in City Park to remember the victims of the worst terrorist attack in American history. Following the minute of silence, local ministers spoke briefly, the Tri-county Marine Corp League performed a flag-raising ceremony and Carol Anne Kellin sang the national anthem a cappella and flawlessly.

The flag raising ceremony was concluded by bugler and former Chief Warrent Officer John Howell playing "Taps." Howell, 89, is the oldest member of the Marine League unit. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater including North China at the end of the war. Following "Taps," a bagpipe rendition of the traditional hymn "Amazing Grace" was played by Bill Siemon of Micanopy.

The service was conclude by tolling a fire bell 3070 times, once each for the workers, airline passengers, firefighters and police officers who were killed by religious zealots in the attack. |
