Noise and Airport Road Bridges Discussed

Noise and Airport Road Bridges Discussed

Jim Hoy

The Cedar Key Commission and audience members concurred at the January 23 Commission meeting that bridge repairs and enforcement of a noise ordinance need immediate attention. The recent closure of the "Fishing Bridge" to fishing prompted Commissioner Heath Davis to propose that he and City Attorney David Coffey rewrite a Levy County request to the State for special funding to replace two bridges on Airport Road. Commissioner Pat O'Neal, responding to numerous complaints about amplified entertainment sounds, got broad support for enforcement of the existing noise ordinance and creation of a more explicit noise ordinance.

Commissioner Davis will ask County Commissioner Rooks for permission to revise an existing bridge replacement request. The rationale of the revision is that replacing just one of the deteriorating bridges at a time does not make sense.

Late night amplified sound, allegedly from the Raw Bar on Dock Street, has generated complaints from residents of Natures Landing, Second Street, Eighth Street and Gulf Boulevard. Commissioner O'Neal, who is the Commission's liaison with the Police Department, said that he is recommending revision of the current noise ordinance and strict enforcement of the existing ordinance. He added that written complaints are needed. Commissioners Vanessa Edmunds, Heath Davis and Sue Colson testified to the noise problems, as did audience members Lucille Andrews and Robert Robinson.
