Water Pipeline to Airport Area

Water Pipeline to Airport Area

Jim Hoy

Representatives of the Cedar Key Water and Sewer District, City Commission, Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and Levy County met March 19 to plan for better water service to the Airport area. A proposed eight inch diameter 2000 foot long pipeline under Goose Cove is expected to provide adequate water and volume to fight fires, in contrast to the current supply via a four inch pipe.

Most homes in the airport area are in Levy County but not incorporated in Cedar Key. The City Commission, which also constitutes the CRA, plans to fund the pipeline which is currently estimated to cost $184,000. Levy County residents will benefit from the project as well as those property owners who have annexed into Cedar Key, therefore a promise of county construction equipment for the project.

The pipeline under Goose Cove will be installed by directional boring of a 2000 foot long hole according to Jack Hotaling who is in charge of Water District engineering. This project has been described as "historic" by a Water Board member in that the four government entities are working in close cooperation. Once appropriate permits have been granted the work will take approximately three months.
