Mary Hale Mizell

Obituary

Mary Hale Mizell of Cedar Key passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at her childhood home in Cedar Key.


Mrs. Mizell was born in Cedar Key in 1910 to Ida Little Hale and William Henry Hale, and attended Cedar Key School and Florida State College for Women. After graduating, she returned to Cedar Key to teach the fifth grade. She married John Keener Mizell of Gainesville in 1932 and soon after moved to Leesburg, Florida.

After her mother died in 1978, she returned to Cedar Key and renovated her family's historic home. She contributed her gardening expertise to the grounds of Christ Episcopal Church and her knowledge of Cedar Key history to the Cedar Key Historical Society and to several publications about Cedar Key. Mrs. Mizell was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.


She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Mizell of Baltimore; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Bill Betts of Cedar Key; and a niece and nephew, Jane Betts Ireland of Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Charles Hale Betts of Washington, DC.


A service was held Sunday, January 6, at Christ Episcopal Church of Cedar Key. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Haven Hospice of the Tri-Counties, 311 NE 9th Street, Chiefland, FL 32626.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services Chiefland, 1301 N. Young Blvd. Chiefland, FL 32626.
