Obituary

Howard Tyus Powell, of Cedar Key, Florida, died July 31, 2010. He was born in Kite, Georgia on January 6, 1926. He was a most generous man, an astute businessman, a master gardener and a kind and loving husband and father.

After serving in the Navy, Howard attended the University of Georgia and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Forestry. He spent the next 50 years working in the lumber and timber industry. Howard is the founder of Timber Products Inspection, world`s largest, private forest products inspection and testing agency. He was also the longest serving appointee to the American Lumber Standards Committee, which reports directly to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Howard traveled the globe working in more than half of the world`s countries at the request of governments aware of his reputation for writing fair standards. In 2001, Howard received the American Wood-Preservers` Association Award of Merit - a lifetime achievement award. In 1995, Howard sold Timber Products to his employees.


In 1997, Howard moved to Cedar Key, Fl and started a clamming business. Throughout his life, he enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and traveling. He had a great desire to leave this world a better place. He was a champion in recycling, composting, and self sufficient gardening. He contributed many years of his life setting an example for the next generation.


Howard leaves his wife, Sally Beveridge; three children, Lee Powell, Patty Treadwell and Tommy Powell; two granddaughters, Tonia Treadwell and Katie Treadwell; two great granddaughters, Paegan Treadwell and Destiny Treadwell; former wife, Peggy Powell; a sister, Martha Lunceford; a brother, Charles Powell; two stepsons, Scott Beveridge and James Beveridge; two step grandsons, Graham Beveridge and Nathan Beveridge, and many, many friends.


There will be a celebration of his life held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in his garden at home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Haven Hospice of Chiefland, Florida
