Student Spotlight: Kent Sloan
Sarah Bartholemy and Mikayla Pope, Shark Correspondents

Kent Sloan, not just your average Cedar Key 5th grader, is this week`s Student Spotlight.
Kent is the son of Aaron and Jessica Sloan, and the younger to brother to Tyler Sloan, and older brother to Tristan and Kaley Sloan.

Kent enjoys hunting, four wheeler riding, and hanging out with friends. Kent really likes 5th grade; "Fifth grade is fun and easy; I keep the A/B honor roll." When Kent isn`t hunting or riding four wheelers, you can usually catch him out at baseball practice or listening out to Rock and Hip-Hop music. Kent plays on the city league baseball team, along with his brothers.
When asked what he is most looking forward to this year, Kent said "Going to Washington D.C. with the Safety Patrol, seeing the White House and all of our countries roots." Kent loves hanging out with friends: River Wirth, Isaiah Jones, Joey Stewart, Holly Bishop and Trace Epperson, in his free time.

All in all Kent said "I have a really great life and a great family that supports me; it is awesome being Kent Sloan."

Staff Spotlight: Lisa Smith
Sarah Bartholemy and Mikayla Pope, Shark Correspondents

Mrs. Lisa Smith is the Classroom and ISS Aid at Cedar Key School. Lisa wears many different hats and is essential to Cedar Key School; she helps so many people on a daily basis, from students to teachers and staff.

Mrs. Lisa`s day consists of aiding in the classroom for 1st and 2nd grade, grading papers for the rest of the elementary and keeping an eye on the students in ISS. Smith was born and raised in Cedar Key, Florida, and even met her spouse Mike Smith while working at the Cedar Key Grocery Store in 1987. The couple was married in 1992, and just recently celebrated their 19th anniversary. They have 3 kids, Emily Smith in 7th grade, Michael Smith in 4th grade, and Riley Smith in 3rd grade. When asked where she sees herself in 10 years, Smith said, "Worn out! All the kids will be graduated from high school, and I`m guessing I`ll be busier than ever."

When Mrs. Lisa isn`t busy at school you can usually find her crocheting, walking, fishing, and spending time with her family.

Amtgard in Cedar Key
Shark Correspondent
Whitney Tyler

Amtgard is a medieval fantasy live action role playing game; the players dress in garb and fight with weapons ranging from daggers to clubs, which are all made of foam. One rule is, if it leaves a bruise then it`s illegal.

Chris Occhi has been playing Amtgard for almost 10 years. Occhi moved to Florida from Minnesota with his wife and step-children. The whole family plays and loves it very much. Occhi loves and misses it so much that he wants to start one in Cedar Key; not to mention it`s a learning experience and it gives middle and high school students something to do to stay out of trouble and have fun.

Amtgard is a nonprofit organization and does a lot of charity work. It only costs $6 every six months, and they welcome any age. "The youngest child I knew to ever hold a sword was one year old, and the oldest was ninety years old," Occhi comments. "But keep in mind that you have to be 14 years or older to be able to vote or run for office."

Different officer positions are Monarch (Aka president or sheriff), Regent (Organizes the arts and sciences part of Amtgard), Champion (Organizes all the battle games), and Prime Minister (a mixture of treasurer and secretary duties).

In Amtgard there are different classes which is a medieval or fantasy character type. There are three categories: Fighting, Castors, and Color. In the fighting category there is the Archer (ex: Robin Hood), Assassin (Ninja), Barbarian (Viking), Monk (Bruce Lee), Scout (Little John), and the Warrior (Lancelot). In the Castors category there`s the Bard (ex: Shakespeare), Droid (Lady of the Lake), Healer (Helps people, brings people back from the dead), and the Wizard (Merlin). And last in the Color category there`s the Peasant (a nobody), and the Monster (which ranges from Goblins to Dragons)
