Freshman Poetry
Taryn Epperson: Shark Correspondent The freshman class of Cedar Key High School has been studying poetry in English. They`ve been writing their own poems as well as studying the work of famous poets like Nikki Giovanni and Ellen Hopkins. Each student had to write around eight poems, ranging from free-verse to sonnets.
The poems were then bound into a folder to create an anthology. Each anthology had a theme, student Michael Shewey chose "Baseball" where as student Phoebe Cahours chose "Pretty in Pink". After they finished their work a poetry cafe was held with refreshments and lots of snapping. Grades four through eight were invited and student Taylor Simpson said "It was creative and fun. It makes me excited to do the poetry unit in 9th grade." "The poetry unit we have been studying has been a great learning experience" claimed Heather Deaton. Building Blocks of Education
Montana Beckham: Shark Correspondent Students in 4th and 5th grade went to an education program developed by LEGOLAND Florida on March 15th. The purpose was to participate in the "Amazing Machines" around LEGOLAND. These activities, developed by the University of South Florida Polytechnic, offered teaching lessons to students on simple machines using gears and pulleys. Followed by a chance to experience what they learned with the attractions. Fifth grade shark Kent Sloan, when asked about what he learned, said: "I was taught how on some attractions like the Gears and Pulley Kid Power Tower had Potential energy until a lever was pulled that released the ride creating Kinetic energy as we raced to the top. I not only had fun but learned a lot too!" Thanks to LEGOLAND students were able to learn while enjoying themselves. Sometimes this isn`t always an option. So it`s great for the younger generation to have a break but still be involved in something curriculum related.
Due to time restraints, some students did not have time to experience the FCAT designed sessions, but did get to apply classroom experiences almost everywhere to extend their learning of energy and simple machines while having a blast.
