WastePro Asks for Increase

WastePro Asks for Increase

Jim Hoy

Ten months into a contract between WastePro and the City of Cedar Key, WastePro has asked for a 3.45 per cent increase in garbage collection fees.

Public Works Director Josh Wilson presented figures on recycling tonnages and savings resulting from lower waste disposal fees at the Levy County dump. One hundred twenty-six tons of recycled materials have been removed from disposal at the dump in just ten months. That reduction in dump fees saved the City $8,850. Furthermore, total savings of waste disposal under the new contract are $12,837.

Commissioner Gen Hodges quickly moved to reject WastePro`s request for an increase. His motion was seconded by Commissioner Scott Dennison. Commissioner Hodges noted that the departure of snowbirds will have reduced volume of trash in recent months and lower fuel costs since WastePro`s request may counteract the need for an increase in fees. Hodges` motion passed unanimously.

Commissioner Dale Resister then moved, and Commissioner Dennison seconded, that the City Staff and Commission explore ways to increase the recycling tonnage and reduce garbage disposal costs prior to further discussions with WastePro.
