Congrats to Our Commission, Now We Must Help

Congrats to Our Commission, Now We Must Help

Editorial

Cedar Key Commissioners have shown great commitment to the well-being of our community. Last May the voters filled four of the five Commission seats, two with rookies and two with candidates with two years of experience. The result has been uniformly good. A budget has been hammered out. The City`s administrative structure has been modernized. Zoning problems are being addressed in a constructive way. Most important, the impacts of County and State policies on Cedar Key are being proactively addressed.

Very recently the Commission sent word to Bronson that the proposed Andrews Tract development is not good for Cedar Key. At its last meeting the Commission planned a resolution in opposition to developers` plans to use North Florida water to speed the paving-over of South Florida.

It is now time for the people of Cedar Key to support the Commission`s concern about over-development of our Coastal Zone. November 3, at 6:30 PM, the Levy County Planning Board will make a recommendation for or against changing the Comprehensive Plan to accommodate building of 122 to 200 houses in the Andrews Tract. (That is in addition to the seventy-eight allowed in Cedar Key Plantation.) The Chair of the Cedar Key Planning Agency, the City Commission and County Commissioner Lillie Rooks have called for citizens to attend the County hearing.

Mark your calendars. Drive to Bronson. Take a neighbor with you to the November 3 LPA hearing. Let the County LPA know that the combined effects of two large housing developments in our Coastal Zone will damage the character and quality of life in Cedar Key.
