Airboat Noise

Editorial

Cedar Key Police Chief Bubba Castell has announced fishing regattas in April and May that will bring some marina traffic congestion and considerable airboat noise.

These events offer several opportunities, namely enforcing new rules for airboat departure and return to City Park, enforcement by state officials of a new state law requiring mufflers on airboats and exercise of good manners while visiting Cedar Key.

Complaints from parents of children swimming at City Park that appeared to be endangered by returning airboat fishing regatta participants precipitated a rule that airboats avoid the designated swimming area. Furthermore, Chief Castell, in response to complaints about airboat noise, has required that the starting line be one hundred yards offshore.

In 2006 numerous airboats stranded on the beach by the tide created a disturbance and beach erosion trying to blast loose. Noise ordinances within the city limits will be enforced.

New State of Florida regulations require engine exhaust mufflers on airboats. Although airboat enthusiasts are quick to point out that the propellers are the major source of noise, mufflers are required. The airboat regatta April 28 provides an excellent opportunity for Florida Fish and Wildlife officers to inspect about 100 airboats at one location, namely City Park.

Another opportunity is for visiting airboat operators to enjoy Cedar Key hospitality while being considerate guests. That would include warming up engines at idle speed, avoiding low wake zones and residential areas.
