Timely Guest Editorials & Letters Are Welcome

Editorial

The news, as now delivered in the 21st centurey, comes to you electronically. CNN led the way, providing breaking news 24 hours a day. As use of the Internet spread, online newspapers such as Cedar Key News started covering local events. Cedar Key News has been providing local news online for eight years. True, we do provide news in the old-fashioned way as well, for those who do not have easy access to a computer. But, our primary mission is providing news online and in a timely manner.

Beyond news of accidents, crimes and obituaries, we cover City Hall, Cedar Key School, local clubs and organizations. To do that we often rely on representatives of the organizations and students. We encourage submission of articles, photographs and letters to the editor. Accounts of fishing trips, restaurant reviews and nominations for Dog of the Week add to the hard news and announcements we publish.

The value of online news was apparent a few years ago when we reported that Florida DOT was planning to destroy the cedar trees along Highway 24. The response by citizens and local authorities was rapid and effective. The trees were saved simply by the inexpensive and ecologically correct lowering of the speed limit.

Cedar Key News editorials address local and global problems, of which we have an abundance. We invite guest editorials. (They are subject to Board of Directors approval, just as are all editorials.) The potential local effect of the BP Gulf oil spill that began in April presents many topics for comment. Letters to the editor or guest editorials must be received no later than three days before our print edition dates. Submissions by email are given preference.
