Cedar Key Arts Show

Editorial

"Judgments of aesthetic value rely on our ability to discriminate at a sensory level."
Aesthetics, Wikipedia

"It is self-evident that nothing concerning art is self-evident."
Theodor Adorno

Once each year thousands of art lovers stream down State Route 24 to Cedar Key`s arts festival. Few of them are kept awake cogitating about the philosophy of aesthetics. They know what they like when they see it! However, the two above quotes indicate the range of thought on what art is.

Cedar Key`s arts show, this year on April 28 and 29, addresses the aesthetics issue in three ways. First, potential entrants in the show must submit photographs of their creations to a jury before they are accepted as exhibitors. Second, the exhibitors are subjected to a judge who awards significant prize money. (In the past when two judges were in charge severe differences of opinion resulted in a stalemate.) Finally, voting by the people who come to the show with their dollars provides another measure of the art and "discrimination at a sensory level." Vox populi!

The artists come to Cedar Key for various reasons. To sell their art may be foremost, but they also come because they appreciate the beauty of our island. Furthermore, the hospitality of Cedar Key volunteers and the Saturday night reception for the artists go beyond the need to sell art.

Come to the Cedar Key show and take home "autographed" work that touches your soul!
