LEVY COUNTY MARKS & BRANDS --- 1865 - 1907

Historic researcher, Dix Stephens of Inglis has recently published another book setting forth more of the history of Levy County, The book, about a little known source of local family history, is a transcription of all of the Marks & Brands recorded by our ancestors from 1865 to 1907.

Working from the original records in the Levy County History & Archives Center of the Clerk's Office, Stephens has reproduced the actual mark and brand recorded with the various Clerk's of the Court over the years. Also included with the name of the person registering the mark or brand is a physical description of the mark.

In addition to an all name index, Stephens has included a history of open range in Florida and an explanation of the different markings. Anyone who owned livestock is included among the marks recorded, including several marks of the Eagle Pencil Factory in Cedar Key.

Levy County is one of three Florida counties to retain a complete set of their animal registrations. Regardless of whether you have ancestors in Levy County or not, this book would be a valuable addition to your history collection.

The cost of the book is $20.00 plus $1.84 and is available from the author, Dix Stephens, P.O. Box 136, Inglis, Florida 34449 or call (352) 447-2966.
