Resolution; Whereas, during the month of October, 1941 torrential rains came
along the Gulf Coast of Florida and particularly in Levy and Gilchrist Counties
causing flood and overflow waters to reach the highest mark in these counties
ever recorded, and whereas, said rains and waters have caused considerable
suffering and material damage to the lands, crops and feed supplies, as well as
live stock, hogs, etc., of many farmers residing in these counties even driving
many families from their homes, and financially handle the situation, it is felt
that it is and should be the duty and responsibility of the Federal Government
to protect its people and their properties in such disaster, and whereas the
draining of the Waccasassee River and its tributaries from its origin in
Gilchrist county following its usual channel through Levy County to the Gulf of
Mexico, together with lateral canals or other means of drainage of adjacent
areas in said counties would prevent a recurrence of such a catastrophe in these
areas and that by so doing thousands of acres of currently untillable soil could
and would be reclaimed. Be it further resolved that the County Commissioners of
Levy and Gilchrist Countries assure the Federal Government that all necessary
rights -of-ways for lateral canals and other drainage will be supplied for the
Government without cost, and a copy of this resolution be immediately certified
by the joint signature of the Chairmen of the respective Boards, attested by the
Clerks of each count to Honorable Lex Green, Member of Congress, and United
States Senators, Charles O. Andrews and Claude Pepper. Done and adopted this
18th day of November, A.D. 1941.
