20 August 1868 - At the close of the Civil War, Levy County struggled to re-establish law and order in the county. On this date, John Tyer took the oath of office and was sworn in as Sheriff of Levy County. On 01 April 1872, Tyer was replaced by W.B. Wimberly. On 22 February 1873, Wimberly was replaced by G.W. Hodge. On 17 November 1875, Hodge was replaced by Thomas B. Faitonte and Faitonte was replaced by H. Porter Jackson on the 16th day of January 1877.
115 years ago 07 May 1888 - J. Ira Gore, A. Woolridge, F.E. Hale, and W.W. Cottrell made application to the Levy County Board of County Commissioners for the exclusive right to plant oysters in all the land covered by water and suitable for planting oysters within a given boundary around Cedar Key excepting the lands covered by water that may at any future time be required by any person or persons or corporation on and through which to cut, construct and use a ship canal. 79 years ago
08 July 1924 - Miss Vassie Pinson was appointed Supervisor of (Voter) Registration making her the first woman to hold office in Levy County. The next woman appointed was Mrs. P.N. King in 1938 and Mrs. J.O. Beauchamp in 1942. In 1945, the Florida Legislature passed an act making the office of Supervisor of (Voter) Registration an elected rather than an appointed position with a four year term. In 1963 the Legislators changed the title of the office to Supervisor of Elections. Mrs. Joe (Louise N.) Sale was elected to the office on 05 November 1948. She was succeeded by Mrs. Artha Spillane in 1968, Mrs. Joy Smith in 1980, and current Supervisor of Elections, Mrs. Connie Asbell in 1992.
