Photos and History of Levy County Churches Needed for Book

Toni Collins

The Levy County Genealogy and History Society plans to compile and publish a book of photographs and histories of Levy County`s churches. However, Society members need your help. We are asking anyone who has historical information or photographs of a church located in Levy County to share that information with us for publication.

For the past year Society member, Dix Stephens of Inglis has been researching the Levy County Land Records to locate many of the County`s early churches. More than 125 land records have been compiled showing the sellers, the buyers, the amount of land, the location, and sometimes conditions such as the land would revert to the sellers if no church was built. Many of the churches also served as neighborhood schools.

The publication will be divided in two sections. One section will contain the histories and photographs of local churches and the second section will contain the information on land transfers of the counties many house of worship. A map will be included which will show locations since many of the churches no longer exist.

We welcome submissions and will include the history of any and all churches regardless of age. When the contributions are assembled, this book will be a permanent record for future millenniums and generations.

For more information, please contact:
in the Yankeetown-Inglis area, Dix Stephens - 447-2966;
in the Williston area, Toni Collins -528-0102;
or in the Bronson-Chiefland area, Cindy Jo Ayers - 486-2312.

Contributions may be mailed to The Levy County Genealogy and History Society, P.O. Box 159, Bronson, FL 32621.
