The Levy County Genealogy and History Society invites everyone interested in local history to come hear Fred W. Wood, Jr., a lifelong resident of Evinston, present an historic account of the 120 year old settlement he calls home.
Wood will speak at the Levy County Quilt Museum on Sunday, September 21st at 2:00 PM.
Evinston, a settlement which straddles the Alachua-Marion County line, sprang up on the Atlantic Coast Railroad line which traveled from Jacksonville to St. Petersburg. Named for Captain William Drayton Evins of South Carolina, the area was settled in the early 1880s. A descendent of Captain Evins and his wife, Mary (Creswell) Evins, Wood lives in the house that was built for that family in 1886. In November of 1990, a scene from the Hollywood movie, "Doc Hollywood", starring Michael J. Fox, was filmed in the front yard and on the front porch of Wood`s home. The Society also will celebrate it`s second anniversary and a name change. The Society`s name has been changed to include History to reflect a move toward the study and research of local and state history. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served following the historic presentation. Evinston, a settlement which straddles the Alachua-Marion County line, is about 120 years old.
