MORE REDFISH

MORE REDFISH

Capt. Dan Shannon

That`s right. This is another story about catching so many redfish our shoulders hurt.

Last Wednesday the 7th I met 5 guys from the Villages at the city marina dock and we shoved off at 7:45 that morning. Folks, this trip was concise and to the point. So is this story. I told the men at the dock that I would target redfish first, and that we should start in 10 to 15 minutes.

Tom with a Nice Red

It takes about 10 minutes to get to Seahorse Key from Cedar Key city marina. We anchored up there next to an oyster bar that`s about 100 yards long. Great redfish habitat.

Redfish spawn inshore during the months of September and October and `patrol` around these bars picking off the small fishes and shellfish that live among the oysters.

I was handing out rods and baiting hooks and threw out the 1st bait. With 5 fishermen, we should line up our baits as to cover one end of this bar. All in a row about 5 yards apart. I turned to hand out 2nd rod and the 1st fisherman was already struggling with his rod. I couldn`t hand out gear fast enough. As soon as a bait hit the water and sank the 2.5ft to the bottom, BAM, reels buzzin`, rods bending.

I`m hopping from bow to stern netting reds from both sides of the pontoon boat and measuring length of fish and handing out bait and releasing 3 redfish that were over the legal limit of 27in.

Jim and His Red

This is just our 1st stop. Not all the reds were `keepers` at 18in up to 27inches. Throughout our trip we probably caught 10 redfish that were under 18in. I quickly release those smaller fish. You should hear the groans and discouraging words coming from the fishermen when I release a redfish too long, over 27in. Thats a lot of good eating going back into the water.

After a while we motored over to Deadmans Key and the same kind of action was there also.

High tide was 10:45 that morning . We started fishing at 8am. Important points. Rising tide and morning sunlight. Throw in light winds and all conditions were lookin` good for an action packed 4 hour trip.

I usually stop at 5 to 6 different spots during a trip, but last Wed. the 7th we stopped only twice. We`re allowed to keep 1 redfish per fisherman and all 5 of my fishermen went home with their redfish. They caught so many keeper size that I was able to take one home too. The fish started hitting real good as soon as we started and we left them biting. 2 spots. Out and back. Concise and to the point.

Capt. Dan with a brand new Zebco reel and a 19.5in red, he was released because we already had our 6 keepers in the cooler. What an Honor!

Folks, the fishing is going to get better during the next 2 months. Water temps are cooling bringing in speckled trout and mackerel too. If you want to catch some big fish and take home some fresh fillets, please call me at 352-221-5463 and we`ll get out there and do it. go to:
