Inshore Cedar Key

Capt. Dan

The coastal waters are slowly warming to that magic 70 degree level, and the mackerel and trout and redfish are slowly making their way into and around Cedar Key.

Silver and speckled trout are showing up over the shallow grassy flats, and I`ve landed a few mackerel out past North Key in 8ft of water. We`ve hooked up with many redfish that were just a little under the legal 18in limit but I`m sure we`ll have plenty of `keeper` reds soon.

The water temperature was 68 degrees last Sunday the 11th when I took the Kazmier family from Brandon, Florida out fishing. They sure were good sports. It was breezy and choppy out in the open water so we stayed in the lee side of North Key for a couple of hours where most of our trout came from. We caught 1 red up next to an oyster bar on the north west side of the key. We were fishing for redfish at Deadmans Key with cut bait on the bottom when Jessica caught a 17 in speckled trout. Right up close to the oysters, patroling the bar, just like the reds.

Heres` a picture of the youngest member of the Kazmier family, Kaylee, holding up a big trout. She gave it to me and my wife Jeannette and we had it for our dinner. With the temps warming, and the fish closing in on us, I`m very optimistic about my next trip Tuesday the 13th. I`ll keep you posted.

Call me at 352-221-5463 and catch some fresh fish of your own. I`ll fillet em` all. thanks, Capt. Dan
