As we shoved off from the dock at Cedar Key, folks yelled, "good luck". Well, it was Friday the 13th and we were joking about good luck and bad luck. We shouldn`t have worried at all. We had light winds and healthy fish habitat everywhere and it was springtime in Cedar Key, Florida. 2 of my 5 guests were fishing on the bottom, and 3 were floating shrimp above the grass. We fished in 1 spot for 2 hours catching speckled trout so long you didn`t have to measure them. You just knew they were over the 15in. legal `keeper` size. Fisherman Bruce caught a 14.5in Pompano with shrimp weighted down on the bottom. Our biggest Mackerel was caught off the bottom. All but 1 of our trout were caught with shrimp floating under a `popping` bobber. We had started our trip at high tide, so the water had been falling since we left the dock. I found a grassy spot with 4ft of water to finish off the trip and we topped our cooler with 1 more plump trout before heading back in. After a bunch of picture taking I got busy filleting their catch. They left with 1 large, fat, ziplock bag full of fresh fish. All of them delicious, but the Pompano is very special. You know it`s nickname is `the cadillac of the ocean`. Check out the picture of Ellen with her Mackerel. It`s still springtime and the fishing is great, so call me at 352-221-5463 or go to http://www.inshorefloridafishing.com. thanks, Capt. Dan |
