The group was from Jacksonville and they were taking 2 of the youngsters out fishing on an early Fathers Day celebration. Like many days lately it was a little breezy Friday the 15th. Not enough to keep 5 guys away from fishing the waters of Cedar Key. There was a little chop on the water as we motored out towards North Key and a vast shallow area just north of the key. Wind out of the southeast at 10 knots steady.
There are a lot of trout out on the flats and there should be all summer long. We caught a lot of fish, but 10 yr. old Rutledge Feltel caught the only 17in. `keeper` trout at our 1st stop while bouncing around in the wind and chop. We motored over to the edge of North Key and an oyster bar where Rob Reynolds caught a redfish feeding there. That`s him in the picture with the red.
A while later, and with a bit more breezy conditions, retired U.S. Coast Guard Bosons Mate Barton Lanahan snatched a 19.5in. speckled trout out of the water off of Seahorse Key. The whole trip he and I talked of boats and work and duties aboard ships and different places and he never really fished at all.
Towards the end of our trip he picked up a rod that was baited with a strip of pinfish and tossed it over the side and caught the biggest trout of all. One cast, one fish. Good job.
