Hello and welcome to the Sheriff's Corner. This week's Corner is in response to a citizen's request regarding cell phone usage. I know that people use cell phones all of the time even while driving. I've personally seen driving actions that made me think the driver was impaired only to find they were talking on their cell phone and not paying attention.
So here are some of the basics that can help you be safe. First, get to know your cell phone and it's features such as speed dial and redial. When you are home or someplace stationery program your phone to work simply and easily. Next, use hands free devices. They are fairly inexpensive to get a speaker phone accessory. If you are driving, these are the best way to use your phone if you have to. Try to position your phone within easy reach. Fumbling in a pocket or purse to find your phone can be extremely dangerous.
Now the big one. Please stop using your phone during hazardous conditions or situations. This includes heavy traffic times or hazardous weather conditions. Please pay attention to the road. Taking notes, looking up phone numbers while driving almost certainly will get you into trouble. Now the real tough one. Dialing while driving. Try not to or at least plan before you actually need to dial. Places like red lights, stop signs or other stationery periods are good. If, however, you do have to dial, try to dial one or two numbers at a time between checking the road ahead and your mirrors.
Remember, you can also use your phone to help others who have encountered trouble or if you see a crime in progress. Please stay safe. Take care. |
