Responsibilities of a Public Figure

Responsibilities of a Public Figure

Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I would sincerely recommend that someone have a conversation with Cedar
Key`s mayor regarding his responsibilities as a public figure.

Early Friday, while it was still thought that Hurricane Charley might make
landfall in the Cedar Key area, the Mayor made comments on TV20 news
indicating he had no intention of evacuating and made a comment to the
effect "If you live by the water, sometimes you live in the water."

He has a responsibility to the public, and his facile breeziness in the face
of a Category 4 hurricane may have contributed to many dozens of deaths if
Cedar Key had experienced Punta Gorda`s fate.

- Steve Rice, Gainesville.
