Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge Nature Walks The first Monday of every month there is a nature walk in the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. On April 6th we had an informative power point presentation on the butterflies most often seen in this area. Although it rained we did manage to get a short walk. In that kind of weather, cool and rainy, butterflies are hard to find. On May 4th our next walk will be in Dixie County. The Dixie Mainline is a fascinating place with various habitats. There is cypress swamp, pine uplands and salt marsh. Birds nest there and migrate through. At times I have seen Barred Owls, River Otters, soft shell turtles, hogs, deer, turkey, and water moccasins. Of course there is no guarantee that we will see any of these, however we will see many interesting plants, animals and birds. Please join us by meeting either at the WalMart parking lot, garden area end (but out by the Kentucky Fried Chicken place), or at The Suwannee Fire Station at the intersection of the Dixie Mainline and Hwy 349. Meeting times will be 8:30 at WalMart; 9:15AM at the Fire Station. Remember to bring bug repellant, sun screen, water, and a hat. Please call me, Joan Stephens, at 352-463-1095 for directions and information. We look forward to seeing you there! Friends Of the Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges P. O.
