Bronson, Cedar Key, Cheifland, & Williston Attend LASC meeting.

Whitney Tyler - Shark Correspondent

On September 22nd at 9:30 the first 2011 2012 LASC meeting was called to order in Williston high school. The acronym LASC stands for Levy Association of Student Councils. These meetings consist of student government students from Bronson, Cedar Key, Chiefland, and Williston meeting up at each school throughout the year to discuss business. "Each school could choose to do its own thing, but having LASC gives us sense that our county is really together. Better yet it strengthens us with an exchange of ideas." Williston`s Quincy Cason commented as he made a motion to not read the minutes of the last meeting. Once it passed, Cedar Key`s Claire Brown read the treasurers report.

Chiefland`s Karli Bowen then talked about the District 2s (D2) meeting the past weekend. "District 2 really is a great way to become more involved with student government, and with the way our schools are run. Students are given the opportunity to communicate with student government members from other schools to improve the activities that occur on campus. After D2 meetings, students return to their schools with many new friends as well as ideas on how to make life on campus the best that it can be." After discussion on when the next meeting is they moved to the next subject on the agenda.

Each of the 20 students that attended the LASC meeting had a chance to say their thoughts on what they wanted to accomplish this year included some thoughts on a service project that is required each year from each school. At 10:30 the meeting was adjourned.

Coastal Cleanup Follow Up

Chloe Reynolds, Shark Correspondent

This year`s annual Coastal Cleanup was a huge success. There were 83
volunteers who all brought in a large amount of trash. The leading
amount of debris was plastic bottles with an overall count of 304. The
next highest count was aluminum with 219 cans and glass bottles with a
count of 164. For that one day, there were 81 sheets of cover net
brought in. Cedar Key School`s new club SWAT, Students Working Against
Tobacco, worked together with SGA, Student Government Association, to
rid the Marina, Dock St. and 2nd St. of cigarette butts. They
collected 4,188 butts among 23 students.

Last Thursday the cover net contest ended and the winning shop was
Cedar Shoals. The winner was determined by the overall volume of net.

First Cross Country Meet Major Success

Montana Beckham and Stephen Bainbridge, Shark Correspondents

Monday September 19th, Williston hosted the first Cross Country meet of the season. Chiefland, Cedar Key, Williston, Bronson, and Yankeetown middle school and varsity teams all attended the meet. Cross country teams consist of 5 runners. Each individual person places and depending on how high they place that`s the number of points the team receives. Even though Chiefland`s (28pts) varsity girls` team beat Cedar Key`s (29pts) by one point, our very own Lauren Bartholemy finished first in the race, she had this to say about it "The ride up was a lot of fun with everyone anticipating a big win. Last year I ran County after I had the stomach flu so I didn`t run the best, getting back and getting first was like saying I could do it and everyone is ready. I am ready for County and hopefully a team win."

Williston (27pts) beat the varsity boys of Cedar Key (30pts) by three points but once again one of our sharks took first place, by Keith Eberhartd, in the race. Keith said, "I ran in the front of everyone so the win wasn`t very surprising. It was an exhausting race and I`m excited for County." Cross Country coach for Cedar Key, Brad Penney, had this to say, "I am delighted with the individual wins at Williston meet and am looking forward to the rest of race season." The team practices at 6:30 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. Most weekends, they even practice on Saturdays, running run 5 to 7 miles.
