Cedar Key Students Anticipate Summer
Taryn Epperson, Shark Correspondent

Summer is just around the corner and kids and teens everywhere are trading out their fur coats and boots for swimsuits, and tanning oil. Soon the beach will be filled with colorful towels and that oh` to familiar sent of sunscreen lingering in the wind. Cedar Key will be filled with tourists and day trippers excited to soak up the sun and have a boat load of fun.

But what are locals around Cedar Key doing? Going out of town or spending their days here? That`s why I`ve taken the initiative to uncover how CKS students and teachers are planning to spend their summer.

Personally, my plans include spending an equal amount of time here on the beach and the boat, as I will be in Jacksonville, Orlando and Haines City. My plans consist of going to bigger beaches and leadership conferences.
Senior Claire Brown`s summer will be including a lot of growing up; getting married, researching colleges, and reaching her goal of a degree in communications. Student Whitney Tyler`s summer will be full of culture: visiting Paris, France and London, England for a total of nine days. She said "I`m really excited for this upcoming experience it makes me eager for summer to get closer." As for teacher Lauren Adams her plans include teacher workshops in south Florid and traveling to visit family all over the state.

Students and teachers have plans for an exciting summer spanning from traveling the world to staying right here is sunny little Cedar Key.

"Hugo" Review
Whitney Tyler, Shark Correspondent

When I was in eighth grade my sister borrowed a book from the library. It was called The Invention of Hugo Cabret. As she was reading I occasionally glanced over at her, the book looked to be about 500 pages and yet she was already half way through it!

The next time she took a break from reading I quickly grabbed the book and started reading. Right away I realized how my sister read so fast; the book immediately started out with about 40 pages of photographs and then there was a chapter of two pages full of words. In this 500-page book there were almost 300 pages of pictures! My sister soon came back and took her book back, much to my dismay. But don`t worry, I had a plan. That night when she fell asleep I snuck in and stole it! I finished the book in less than an hour.

What is this so-called amazing book about? Hugo Cabret is a twelve-year-old boy who lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station. He depends on secrecy and anonymity to stay hidden among all the clocks and people. To survive he steals food and water, and he runs the many clocks in the station. When he meets a strange girl and the owner of a toy booth, his undercover life, and his most valuable secret is put at risk.

This book is amazing and when I first heard that there was a movie in the theaters called Hugo I jumped with joy. It wasn`t until a couple weeks ago that I finally saw it and it was definitely worth the wait.

The movie stared Asa Butterfield, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Ben Kingsley. All three did a phenomenon job. Asa Butterfield (Known for his role of Bruno in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) is an amazing little actor and his job in Hugo just proved it more so. Hugo Cabret was filmed beautifully and unlike any other, the music made you feel what the character felt, and it made the movie so much more enticing. It is rated PG and is 126 minutes long. This movie is a movie unquestionably worth buying when it comes out onto DVD. I rate it a 5 out of 5.

Cedar Key Shark, Brooke Allen, Breaks School Record
Lauren Bartholemy, Shark Correspondent

"Congratulations to Brooke on your 1st place finish and new school record in high jump (5`4")." wrote Coach Brad Penny in the after meet write up. Saturday March 10, 2012 was book marked in Cedar Key track history as Brooke Allen broke the high jump school record. Doubling her previous personal record, Brooke soared over 5`4", not only breaking the record but taking first place as well.

The track meet held Saturday was a success for not only Brooke Allen, but for the rest of the team. Chloe Reynolds placed second in Triple Jump and third in 100 M Hurdles; Lauren Bartholemy created a personal record for 8 feet in pole vault; Kevin Carswell and Tyler Anderson tied for fourth for pole vault, and Bobby Trammel tied for sixth with another school.

The other team members did very well participating in team events such as 4x4 relay or the two mile. Coach Brad Penney stated, "Boys- were still on track for a District title challenge and girls are still on pace to repeat as County champs." The teams have a meet Thursday, March 15th in Chiefland, which they are hoping to win. Cedar Key School wishes the team good luck!

FCAT Rewards
Taryn Epperson and Whitney Tyler Shark Correspondents

FCAT is coming up and students are hurrying to prepare for it.
Teachers and staff have been looking for ways to motivate students for best results possible. To pass FCAT students are required to score a 3 or higher. The teachers have been searching for ways to reward CKS student`s efforts, and have come up with a couple of ideas such as a rally the week before FCAT, and a drawing once test results are in.

The drawing would consist of everyone who scores a 3 or higher on the reading, math, or science FCAT, a 4 or higher on the FCAT writes, or a years` worth of gains on their scores, names being put into a basket for each test they score in. Principal Sue Ice has been asking for donation to the cause. Donations could include cash, gift cards, or gift certificates.

Mrs. Ice states, "We just want every student to do the best they can, we know we`ve prepared them."
