Unlock Mysteries of the Past During Florida Archaeology Month

Pam Darty

To celebrate Florida Archaeology Month 2012 the Lower Suwannee National
Wildlife Refuge (NWR) will host four distinguished archaeologists and two
Ranger-led walks at the Shell Mound archaeological site near Cedar Key.
All activities are free.

UF archaeologist Dr Kenneth Sassaman will return with more on the 5-year
survey the naturecoast along the Cedar Keys NWR and the 30 miles of
coastline of the Lower Suwannee. He will speak with Dr Hyatt Brown and Dr
Cici Brown, also from UF`s Anthropology Department on March 17th at 2:00 PM in the Cedar Key Library.

The following week on March 21 at 11:00 AM, Dr Julian Granberry will
explain how cultures` migrations can be traced by the evolution of their
language. He has written several books documenting the subject only after
working painstakingly to transcribe information from Spanish journals and
diaries. He will talk on his most recent book, The Calusa: Linguistic and
Cultural Origins and Relationships, and much more.

The free Ranger-led walks will take place on March 22 and 28th at 11:00 AM.
Meet at the Shell Mound Trailhead for a weapons demonstration and music of
the southeastern peoples before the walk. For more information, call the
Refuge at 352/493-0238, ext 223.
