The historic Island Hotel offers the perfect backdrop for display of an exhibit by the "Twelve Artists @ Cedar Key", being presented throughout the month of May. The soft shell-pink walls of the main dining room are hung with an eclectic mix of artwork that reflects a variety of styles and mediums. From the pencil sketch by Linda Seyfert, to the brilliant sunset of Willie Smith, to the richly textured photography of Christian Harkness, each work is stunning and unique. On the deep green walls of the main lobby area the pottery of Henry Gernhardt make a bold statement, and blends seamlessly with the room's opulent décor. An assemblage piece just inside the front door, (by Mike Leiner) is thought provoking and quirky with its crayon bright colors and found objects.

The "Twelve Artists @ Cedar Key" evolved from conversations between local artists about the art world, and the challenges artists face when trying to present their work to the public. The group includes established artists and newcomers who meet bi-monthly to offer each other support, to exchange ideas, and to critique their work. Several of the artists said it is easier to get work shown as a group rather than as an individual artist, especially for new artists. "The enthusiasm of a group often helps motivate an artist to try new techniques and to produce new works" said group member David Chatowsky. Member Judi O'Keefe, who is helping with the promotional aspects of the group, said they are planning on being a part of the "Art Walk" program this fall in Gainesville with a show at the "Still Life in G" gallery.
