Illuminating Life with Brush and Pen - the Artistry of Peggy Herrick

Maureen Landress

When Peggy Herrick picks up a paint brush, or sits down with pen in hand, something magical happens. The complexities of life are shattered into fragments; the pieces captured and suspended in time with startling clarity. She finds beauty in the mundane, inspiration in the ordinary, and hidden depths beneath quiet surfaces. Her work runs the gamut from landscapes to still lifes, photography to poetry, and compilations of written word and painted picture.

Simple subject matter becomes unique art

Beginning with formal painting lessons at the age of four, she has continued to explore the world of art, learning new techniques and discovering her own style of expression. Understanding the mechanics of painting came to her as naturally as walking and talking. Uncovering the emotional aspects inherent in artistic expression has been a life long study.

Artistic expression is as essential to Peggy as breathing, and it is interwoven into all aspects of her life. Her home is like a gallery, with works of art tucked into every corner, filling the space with color and texture. When she travels she creates Journey Day Books filled with words and images quickly sketched as the day unfolds around her. These pages are more than a simple record of her travels; they are artistically rendered observations on life. The most significant discovery she has made along the way is that an inquisitive mind is the most valuable tool an artist can possess

Sharing her knowledge is also part of who she is as an artist. Peggy teaches at the John C. Campbell School in North Carolina, and has created a nonprofit foundation," Journey Day Book, Inc.", to educate others about the art of illuminated journaling. She is a member of the 12 Artists@Cedar Key, and shows her work at the Natural Experience Gallery in Cedar Key.
