"Twelve Artists" Celebration and Exhibit

Maureen Landress

Once again The Island Hotel is sponsoring a month long exhibit of work by the "Twelve Artists @ Cedar Key". The opening reception, held on July 31st, was also a jubilant celebration congratulating member Milinda Allen Christiansen on her graduation from the University of Florida, where she received a B.A.H.A. in Art.

Milinda's post graduate plans call for a brief respite from big city life with a summer job here on the island, where she can continue to pursue her love of art. When asked what was the most memorable part of her college days she replied "It was the total experience that will remain in my memory. The difficulties adjusting to "big city" life, the culture shock coming from Cedar Key, and the interesting, intelligent people I met along the way."

Several of Milinda's works are part of the new exhibit on display on the main floor of the Island Hotel. The exhibit is an eclectic mix of styles and mediums that somehow manage to blend harmoniously with the architecture of the old hotel's dining room and main salon. The deep rose colored walls provide a rich backdrop for the assemblage art of Mike Leiner, the mystical scrolls of Peggy Herrick, and the bold abstracts of Willie Smith.(just a few of the artists showing their work) The exhibit includes pottery, photography, acrylics, sculpture and pen & ink drawings.
