The Royal Jubilee - In Cedar Key

Susan Christian

Englishwoman Susanne Christian celebrated the Royal Jubilee in Cedar Key, though she was far from her home in Britain. Susanne swam from the island to Atsena Otie on Sunday 3rd June to mark Queen Elizabeth II`s 60 years on the throne.

She was accompanied by her partner Paul Jeffries and their friends, Cedar Key residents Gina and Willy Brown. Gina and Willy provided their boat as an escort and support vessel, particularly while Susanne swam across the channel.

Conditions were perfect, with calm seas and light winds. They chose the turning point of the tide for Susanne to launch by the sand spit.

`I was glad to be here in Cedar Key. The weather was much better than at home where Her Majesty, the Royal family and everyone watching the celebrations were cold and wet. Although we were away from Britain during the Jubilee weekend, I wanted to mark the occasion`.

`Part of the celebrations in London took place on the water so a swim seemed like an appropriate way to have our own celebration`.
