Cedar Key School Annual Athletic Awards

On Tuesday, May 14,2002, Cedar Key School held its annual athletic awards ceremony in the school cafeteria. As evident by the many awards received, Cedar Key School had an outstanding athletic year.

Throughout the ceremony it was also obvious how much of an impact Cedar Key School athletics made on the lives of the athletes, coaches, and parents.

Senior Nikki Boggess, Varsity Volleyball MVP and Varsity Cheerleading Most Improved, commented that, "playing volleyball was the highlight of my high school years. Someday, I want to come back to Cedar Key and be the volleyball coach."

Middle School Boys` Cross Country MVP, Carrick Tuck, noted that his "athletic coaches pushed me as far as I could go. I had fun all season. "

Awards were announced beginning with the fall sports. The Middle School Boys Cross Country Team won the Levy County Middle School Championship title. The Varsity Boys` Cross Country Team won the Cedar Key Invitational for the first time. They also qualified for the Regional Meet. Jeff Zeigler was elected MVP of this team and Adam Webster won the Sportsmanship Award.

The Girls` Cross Country Team` also had a very successful year. Rose Myers was the Runner-Up County Champion in the Middle School Division. She also set a new school record in the two-mile race. On the Varsity level, Rita Borelli earned All-District honors. She was also the County Champion. As a result, she was awarded the team`s MVP trophy. The Girls` Cross Country Team also won the Academic Award. Each member of the team earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Malinda Haire, 3rd year JV Volleyball coach, exclaimed that her girls "were a very young team. They have a lot of promise and I`m looking forward to building the program next season." The JV team reached a major milestone when it beat archrival Oak Hall for the first time in many years. Kendra Harden won the MVP award and Heather Daviduk received the Sportsmanship award.

Varsity Volleyball also had a successful season. As mentioned before, Nikki Boggess received the MVP award. Ashley Hodges won the Sportsmanship title. After the awards were given, Ashley Hodges presented Coach Cheryl Allen with a volleyball autographed by all of the team members in appreciation for all of her guidance on the court and off.

The JV Cheerleading squad had an outstanding year despite the youth of its members. Courtney Cress won MVP honors. Mandy Easler won the Sportsmanship award.

The Varsity Cheerleading squad endured despite numerous injuries. Rachel Girdler won the MVP trophy and Nikki Boggess was honored with the Most Improved trophy.

The Middle School Boys` Basketball team improved tremendously over the course of the season. Coach Cris Beckham exclaimed that he was `very proud of his team. " Twins, Ben Bainbridge and Dan Bainbridge walked away with MVP and Sportsmanship honors.

Varsity Girls` Basketball Coach, Vivian Webster, told the crowd that as a former Cedar Key High School basketball player she knew that the kids had to work twice as hard, because of the school`s small size, to win ball games. She went on to say that teaching and coaching basketball in Cedar Key had also been her dream. Rita Borelli earned MVP honors. Whitney Edmunds won the Best Offensive Player Award.

Varsity Boys` Basketball Coach, Biz Paeth, said he was very proud of his community. Even though his team did not have a very successful season, he always noticed that on away games Cedar Key School always had more fans than the home team. The team`s MVP was Chase Nelson. The Best Offensive Player award went to James Bainbridge.

The Boys` Tennis team beat Williston for the first time in many years. Jake Fredericks claimed the MVP award. The Most Improved trophy went to Ben Bainbridge.

Carrick Tuck captured the Coach`s Award for the Varsity Boys` Baseball team. Cameron Cress won MVP honors for the team. Cameron led the baseball team in home runs.

The Boys` Track and Field team had a winning record for the first time in 7 years. They achieved 3rd place in the District and set a new school record for most team points in a season. Jeff Zeigler won the MVP trophy and Tommy Pavao won Sportsmanship honors.

The Girls` Track and Field team had an immensely successful season. They won the District Championships and were 3rd in the Conference. During one meet, the girls` cross-country team came home with 15 trophies. Eleven of the twelve-team members won All-District Honors, six won All-Conference Honors, five won All-Region honors, and one won All-State honors. The 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams set new school records. Whitney Edmunds won Conference MVP and placed 6th in the State High Jump Contest. She was awarded MVP honors and Rose Myers was awarded the Sportsmanship trophy.
