The results of a mail survey of Cedar Key health service needs shows a clear picture of priorities as seen by the community. Two hundred sixty-nine people returned survey forms according to Eileen Senecal, a local nurse, who presented the survey results to the Local Planning Agency March 2. The five most important health needs were: medical care; blood pressure and cholesterol screens; flu and tetanus shots; exercise programs; vision and hearing screenings. These needs are closely related to the top three problems reported, namely, aging problems, alcohol and drug abuse, and heart disease and stroke. The survey found that 59 percent of respondents have private health insurance, and 25 percent have Medicare or Medicaid. The respondents were largely those living within the Cedar Key City limits, whereas 13 percent live in Levy County areas on Cedar Key and 22 percent live in nearby mainland areas served by the Cedar Key Post Office. Of special importance to the Local Planning Agency, which makes recommendations to the City Commission regarding use of Community Redevelopment Agency funds, were the results that show 87 percent of those living inside the city limits favor use of CRA funds for a community/health center. Furthermore, 83 percent of those who have private health insurance support using CRA fund for a community/health center.
