Dredging Resumes

Jim Hoy

Following repeated technical and storm delays, Encore Dredging, Inc. have resumed activities in Cedar Key. Initial delays resulted from failure of dewatering methods, and a search for spoils disposal sites. A series of tropical storms and hurricanes further delayed dredging operations.

In late September a dredging operation began in Goose Cove. That project is currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection according to a local official. Meanwhile, the semi-solid spoils have been removed from the Marina parking lot and transported to an upland site provided by City Commissioner Heath Davis. When Marina dredging resumes, liquid spoils will be transported by tank truck to a forested site near Highway 347 according to Commissioner Davis.
