Massive Piney Point Fire

Massive Piney Point Fire

Jim Hoy

About 5:30 PM, amidst a lightning storm, the McJordan home on Piney Point was reported to be on fire. The Cedar Key Volunteer Fire Department responded, as did four other fire departments before the fire was brought under control about 7:15 PM. Thomas Mohr for Cedar Key News reported that foul weather made it difficult to determine the full extent of damage. Although nearby vegetation was seared, adjacent homes were not damaged. The McJordans are reportedly in Maine. There were no injuries reported.

Cedar Key Fire Chief told Mohr that lightning is the probable cause of the fire. Several witnesses said that the fire was greater than the fire that destroyed the Cedar Key School two years ago.
