Dolphin Aids Rescue

Dolphin Aids Rescue

Jim Hoy

Two dolphins took part in the rescue of kayakers who had capsized off th Big Dock in Cedar Key. Alexander Dobosiewicz, 19, of Gainesville and Daniel Schenk, 29, of Lake Butler found themselves overboard and swallowing salt water in choppy waves Labor Day afternoon. A crew from Island Hopper Tours pulled Dobosiewicz and Schenk from the water. Dobosiewicz told Cedar Key Police that he thought his fellow kayaker had kicked him under the water before he realized that a dolphin had bumped him to the surface. The police report of the incident also identified Bryan and Billy Joe as the Island Hopper crew that aided two other boats in trouble in the rough waters.

In other police news, the past week included arrests for a hit and run, driving under the influence and disorderly intoxication (and associated charges).

According to a police spokesperson, early September 1 Brien E. Wienstel, 34, of Cedar Key was arrested at his home shortly after hitting a loaded boat trailer at the corner of Gulf Boulevard and Whiddon Avenue. Wienstel drove away from the scene according to Eve Jaensen, the wife of the boat owner who was awakened by the crash. In other cases, Garrett McCain, 21, of Cedar Key was arreated for battery of a juvenile, disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest with violence following an incident on Dock Street. Terry Ray Cole, 44, of Cedar Key was arrested for driving under the influence after he failed roadside sobriety tests.
