The Humane Society of Levy County, Inc was a partner in establishing OPERATION K.A.R.E.

OPERATION K.A.R.E. (KATRINA ANIMAL RESCUE EFFORT) is a combined effort of area pet rescues and businesses that are joining forces to save the animals that have survived Hurricane Katrina.

Alley Cats and Canine Orphans, Inc., located in Cocoa Beach, FL and Second Chance Rescue, Inc., located in New Smyrna Beach, FL., has been a lifeline for many of our adoptable animals that were at the Levy County Animal Services. The Humane Society of Levy County, Inc. transports these animals monthly to these rescues in order to lower euthanasia rates at the Levy County Animal Services.

These agencies (Alley Cats & Canine Orphans & Second Chance Rescue and the Humane Society of Levy County, Inc.) alongside with, Earth Pets of Gainesville, and Greenery Square Home and Garden Center of Gainesville, are coordinating the rescue effort.

Currently, we have a staging area set up outside of Jonesville, which is a centralized area for everyone involved. At this staging area, we are utilizing local veterinarians, vet. techs, and volunteers to help with triage. Then, all healthy animals will go to Foster homes and await adoption to a permanent home.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We are asking all Levy County residents to donate their time and financial support. 100% of the funds will be used to evaluate, and medicate these animals that have survived under strenuous conditions. Donations will also be used for short and long term care to get these animals healthy and adoptable. We have no paid staff and overhead.

Other donations which are needed include: food, veterinary supplies, bottle water, leashes, collars, box fans, bungee cords, crates, cat litter, horse supplies, towels, blankets, food and water dishes, FOSTER and ADOPTIVE HOMES.

OPERATION K.A.R.E. has already received animals from those areas hardest hit. As we write this article another group is in route to Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Presently, a third group will be leaving on FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 23rd. All items that are collected will go on future trips to those affected areas. We have several collection sites such as:
Levy County Locations:
• Chiefland Animal Hospital
• Perkins State Bank (Bronson Location)
• Williston Pioneer Sun News
Alachua County Locations:
• Earth Pets
• Greenery Square Home and Garden

Numerous agencies around the area are helping with this effort and we strongly urge everyone in Levy County to do their part and donate to OPERATION K.A.R.E.

The Humane Society of Levy County, Inc. wants to REMIND and RAISE AWARENESS on our main objective, which is to spay and neuter, rescue and adopt animals out of the Levy County Animal Shelter. Please keep in mind the other souls that have been found, picked up, relinquished from pet owners, and dropped off at the shelter. These animals just like the Hurricane Katrina survivors are lost souls looking for their furever home.
